Welcome message from the chairs

It is our great pleasure to welcome you in Athens for the First Workshop on multiMedia Applications over Wireless Networks (MediaWiN 2006).

The advent of 3G cellular systems, which beside classical voice services support also medium data rate communication, together which the huge diffusion of cheap and high-rate wireless technologies for local connectivity, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, ZigBee and so on, are changing the way in which people intend the concept of "communication". The "possibility" of communicating through the traditional telephone and data networks is progressively turning to a users "demand" for a global and ubiquitous connectivity service that involves not only the limited sphere of telephony, but extends to the most advanced multimedia communication services.

This trend makes the transmission of multimedia content over wireless systems one of the most exciting and appealing research topic of the last period.

In this context, the MediaWiN workshop offers the opportunity for researchers and industry professionals to meet one another and discuss last advances in multimedia systems, services and applications over wireless networks. The aim of the forum is, hence, to spread the knowledge about the last achievements in the field of multimedia communications over wireless and to promote the circulation of ideas and the creation of liaisons in the scientific community.

The workshop will be held in conjunction with the 12th European Wireless Conference (EW 2006), which represents one of the most interesting European events devoted to Wireless communications and, hence, represents the perfect framework for hosting the first edition of the MediaWiN workshop.

We expect that MediaWiN will be able to receive all participants in an exiting and stimulating atmosphere, which will be made even more fascinating by the breathtaking beauty of Athens. Finally, we would like to thank you all for your participation and we hope all of you will enjoy this first edition of the workshop and, why not, those that will follow.
